I had never really thought that much about situational ethics before this week. It seems to me every individual is going to feel differently in terms of if the media is acting ethically or not. Some may think it is ethical for the media to only give us particial truths about wars so as not to panic too many people, while others might feel it is competely the opposite. I am sure that the employees of advertising agencies have this same problem in how they determine what is alright to air and what is not. One employee might think that an ad is entirely ethical and that it meets all the standards and another worker may disagree. Sometimes I feel it the media has to do somethings slightly unethical otherwise nothing would be out on the air at all. There are to many factor to watch out for for the media to be entirely ethical.

All of the videos from this week showing the future of media and the world were actually pretty scary. It seems like the world is going to be taken over by computers—where somewhere inside the system everyone will be able to track who you are, where you are, and what your interests are at any second of the day. I suppose it is also sort of the situation we are in now, as websites like facebook and myspace are actually just trackers, with all of our information being sent not only to the government and other demographic companies, but also to future employers. In the future there will be conglomerations not only in old media but in new media – the internet will be taken over by “Googlezon,” and information will be freely exchanged without copyright (good news for consumers, bad news for authors). In “The Future? Part 2” Amazon launches “Place” that is meant to “replicate reality.” Not only, do we never have to leave our homes again, or have any kind of face-to-face contact with other humans, but we can go to mars, or travel to the past… “it’s real,” and “experience is the new reality.”

Product placement in movies is something that is continuing to happen more and more. I suppose that we just have to live with it. At times is doesn’t bother me. I think this is when it is done with subtlty and isn’t just thrown right into your face. In Spiderman, Tobey McGuire shoots his web out at a Coke can on his nightstand. I noticed this, I did realize it was a Coke ad, but it wasn’t obnoxious or annoying to me. He wasn’t standing, posed on the screen, sipping a Coke for 5 seconds. In almost every action movie these days, the car used is a constant advertisement. The car is used often throughout the movie and to me this can get annoying. I’d rather see a car without a symbol that I am familiar with used. To top it off, you will often see ads that say, “Buy the new Cadillac/Lexus/BMW, featured in the new hit movie Born Identity/Mission Impossible, etc.” This takes it way over the top for me. Not only do they put the product in the movie, but they have a separate ad to let you know that the product was used in the movie. I guess its just in case you missed it.

This week we discussed ethics. It is interesting when you think about what is morally right and what is morally wrong. I feel that each particular situation, when it comes to media, is so unique. It is difficult to make rules about ethics and say “this is what is morally wrong” and “this is what is morally right.” Take the Yes Men people. They are deceiving people. They lie to the media and pose as people who work for certain companies. According to what we have been taught since day one of our lives, this is highly unethical. They are tricking people and taking advantage of this deception.

I consider myself to be a moral person. I believe that generally I do what is right and avoid doing wrong (of course there is the occasional exception). Yet when you should us this Yes Men video in class, I didn’t feel that what they were doing was wrong. I didn’t have any kind of negative emotional reaction to what those people were doing. And that is simply because I feel that their cause is just, and this is the only way they can get their point across. Maybe this means that I am not as moral as I thought. Or maybe I’m just a hypocrite, who acts ethically but supports unethical behavior. What I really believe, however, is that the situation matters most. Each situation has a different context; one moral code cannot rule over all media.

I really enjoyed the “We Think” Video… I consider myself to be an optimist, generally. I think life is about giving what you have, in the place that you are, to the people you can, in the best and most unselfish way. Am I an altruist? Idealist? Ok, maybe sometimes… I don’t think I’m an altruist because I think that I understand quite well the necessity for making a “decent living”, and I definitely, honestly admit that I love certain luxuries in life… travelling… little technological gadgets… you know… some of that materialistic “good stuff” that makes us a little too-spoiled, in a bit too-needy-of-a-world.Still, I am optimistic. I believe the future is in our hands. In the generations that are willing, learning, and open to sharing. This video struck a very good point, I think. We either stress about how we are going to eat big, juicy steaks with the music we make, or the gadgets we invent… Or we stop stressing, put our brains together, get creative… And… WE SHARE. Share knowledge, share truth, share love.Hopefully, we won’t destroy the future with our media… And won’t let media destroy our future either.

The shift happens video is very interesting because i think this is what is really happening in the world today. If we think about the past 100 years. The english has evolved in the world today. A lot more more students speak english today and it is growing each day. Then, America is not the power of the world anymore but instead Great Britian. This is just the first aspect of how shift is happening. In media, shift has occured drastically because if we think about how many people send text messages a day and use myspace a day. The video said that the myspace is opened 30 times a day. My space and messenger has been the new way for people to communicate because its easy and instant. Technology is always changing but we see how they have combined the telephone and the internet together. Now with the blackberrys, they have a little keyboard, internet, messenger, and its also used as a telephone. I think the future of technology of media will make people all use these blackberrys instead of using the house phone because its cheaper and more interesting. People want instant feedback and that is exactly what the technology makers are giving them.

The video of truthiness was not just a funny video but also very interesting because it definitely relates to the war and how Bush would choose his words when he talked to the American public. For one thing the whole thing about Iran and Iraq… Was this the whole truth? or just another part of truthiness. Another thing is the fact about weapons of mass destruction.. I think this is a good example of truthiness because they were never found in all the years that the war has been going on.. I mean in 5 or 6 years, they should have found these weapons of mass destruction. Well, this could be true or not, its really not for sure. I think it was a form of truthiness to make people pro-war. People definitely need to start questioning the government if something is not clear. Hopefully, the government will be able answer their questions without “beating around the bush”. My point here is not to talk about the war but just to show media will often say half the truth to influence people in a certain way. For example, FOX is famous for their saying ” It has been said by many” but they never state their forces. This is another great example of truthiness because there is no absolute truth due to no sources and anything to back up what they are saying. In media, we need the news and anyone else that presents information to people through the media to to state facts and be able to back up those facts by sources or else we will never know if its credibile or entirely true.

After talking about Ethics and noticing the Negativeland posting, it reminded me about a discussion I had in another class about the Negativeland vs U2 lawsuit and copyrighting in general. When is copyrighting really an issue? Is it always an ethical problem? There is the view that it is morally wrong to steal things and ideas can be made apart of someone’s property. If you made it, you are the one who should enjoy the benefits from it. However in the case of music, is copyrighting really protecting the artisit or the record label? Artists themselves see very few rewards from this when compared to the label because many artisits sign away the rights to the music. Would it still be a moral issue? If I buy a record shouldn’t I have the right to do with it as I please? What about the djs and producers that remix a track or add their voice over the recording (alla fat man scoop or funk master flex). How should the rights work in that case? When looking at the development and maintenace of pop music and culture over the years, many believe that our culture is made up on the recirculation of artifacts and the ability to take ideas, critique them and modify them is a necessity. So much of music today is made up of recycling old ideas, sampling, or covering music- the baisis of the hip-hop industry, that not allowing the ability for such an exhange to happen would be a danger to pop culture. Therefore where do you draw the line in stealing from someone or building off of another work?
